Great post. Very interesting. I would add one more thing. If your company is, for instance, always bringing people in from Shanghai, do whatever you can to get to know the key consulate people in Shanghai and then ALWAYS be straight up with them. This will greatly increase the likelihood of their taking your invitation letters seriously.

Excellent additional points from Dan Harrris at the China Law Blog. There is no substitute for knowing the key people on the ground wherever you're doing business. And of course part of developing that relationship is to always deal with them honestly.
